Captain’s Message

Mr Dave Denton - Captain 2009

Dear Members,

It is a privilege and pleasure to welcome each and every one of you to the 2009 Season.

I am, like so many other Captains before me, excited and looking forward to the coming year.

It is you the members of Hoylake Golf Club who make the Club what it is today. Without members there is no Club, without a Club there is no Captain.

Being given this opportunity is something I will treasure for the rest of my life.

I wish to thank Graham Handley, Captain 2007 for his nomination, Tom Coleman, Captain 2008 and all the members of the Committee for their help and support during the past sixteen months, plus the best wishes and encouragement of other Past Captains and Members of Hoylake Golf Club.

The Captain's Drive-In for 2009 will be on Saturday the 28th March, and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the first tee, bright and early at 6.40am for those hardy players with early tee times and again at 9.40am for those who like a lie-in and have later tee times.

Drinks and snacks will be available as is now the tradition.

Every Captain wishes to play Golf with as many players as possible throughout the year, and I intend to do likewise. Hence, I ask, if you are unable to play during the season please cross your name off the starting sheet as soon as you can, the earlier the better. This is important, as it will enable other Club members without tee times and myself, to fill a vacant slot.

The majority of team competitions require four players - if you can't play you're letting the team down but if another player can fill that position, you've done the team a favour. Weekly fixture lists are posted on the locker room notice board some five or six weeks in advance, so, if you can't play cross your name off.

Friday 12th June 2009 is the Club Day Out. This year it will be at Vicars Cross GC which is an 18 hole parkland course and will test all of our games. It is situated off  the A51 near Chester.

I have played it several times during the years and enjoyed myself each time, in fact I have always enjoyed every Club day outing. A notice will be posted on the notice board in the locker room later in the year giving more details for those wishing to play and enjoy the day out.

Saturday 25th July is the competition with the Ladies (the only club competition on the day). This is now a long and established event plus a very enjoyable day and the Lady Captain and myself will appreciate your continued support. Please put your name on the list when posted on the locker room notice board.

There are Singles and Doubles Knock-Out competitions during the year. The Doubles Knock-Out format, as in previous years, will be Four-Ball Better-Ball. My partner for the past couple of years has agreed to persevere with me for this years competition.

Put your name and team names on the list when posted on the locker room notice board.

The Committee wishes that as many members as possible will have the opportunity to compete in a Match Play event on Finals Day on the 19th September.

Qualification for the competitions on Finals Day will be prioritised as follows:- Singles and Doubles Knock-Outs, the Captain's Team v The Professional’s Team and the Ryder Cup match against West Hoyle Golf Club.

Wirral League matches take place on Wednesday evenings. These are played against the other Municipal Golf Clubs on the Wirral. Arrowe Park, Brackenwood, the Warren and Ellesmere Port, home and away, and there is always a social gathering after matches are completed. Hoylake Golf Club has been very successful in recent years and your support will not go amiss. Please put your name on the list when posted on the locker room notice board if wishing to compete.

Don't forget to always visit the Notice Board in the Locker Room for information and event details.

There is also a very active Seniors Section at Hoylake for those over 60 and are members of Hoylake Golf Club. Seniors competition days are held on Thursdays.

I wish you all a very successful, eventful and enjoyable season

and hopefully a rain free year.

Cheers

Dave Denton
